Man in the Queue Josephine Tey Robert Barnard 9780684815022 Books Reviews

Josephine Tey got better, but this one is only so so. Ludicrous murder and the reveal Unsatisfying, but the characters and detection in between mostly interesting.
Interesting characters & I will be reading more of the Inspector Alan Grant series.
Great details on how an investigation is conducted.
Sometimes is just wonderful to be able to slip into another world, and Josephine Ted takes you there effortlessly. A good solid mystery that turns on human nature and is resolved by the exploration of individual character. I certainly hope to find other books that feature Inspector Allan Grant
I was drawn into this book by the writing style but, as is so often the case, the author wasn't able to maintain the pace and it became diluted as the story developed. My harshest complaint, however, was the manner in which the mystery was resolved. (Spoiler alert) To have the solution materialize the way it did just left me cold as the corpse. After all the police officer went through; after all his conjuring of possible motives and methods and opportunities; then having a confession drop out of the sky at the moment of truth - very dissatisfying. I would have been willing to give it 4 stars just for the imagery, but I feel the author committed one of the worst cardinal sins of poor resolution of a murder mystery.
Hard book to get into, especially if your genre is modern authors of mystery. But if you can get thru the first three or so chapters, you may catch a "turn of phrase" that will start to make your soul soar and you'll anxiously await the author's next beautiful turn. Sometimes it's good to read for the beauty of the language.
What can I say, I like the way Tey writes. Inner dialog is perfect; the settling is before cell phones and PCs... great!
Her language is worth the price of admission. Very well written and interesting use of words. Story was also solid.
One of the greatest, if not the greatest, mystery author of the so-called Golden Era. Her writing is on par with some of the best authors of the time period, mystery and otherwise.
