Brigands Key Five Star Mystery Series Ken Pelham Books Reviews
Picked this up because I live in SW Florida & the author is a local. It's very good; an entertaining & suspenseful read. It's got mystery, murder, kidnapping, plague & a treasure hunt - all with a CAT 5 hurricane bearing down on this tiny Florida island. I won't reveal the biggest plot twist. You'll enjoy reading it to find out.
A great read and it is one of those which lets you gey into the characters heads and turns them into real people without as lot of suspending belief because the primary player is somewhat unbelievable. For a couple of hours it lets you get away to their island with their troubles and just forget about the rest of the world.
Having said that though I did find the shark encounter a little bit difficult to comprehend but will let future readers decide on their own.
5-stars for Ken Pelham! He kept me guessing all the way to the end. Like a hurricane, I was twisting and turning with the plot. People are dying and why? Up until halfway through the book, it felt like a who-done-it, but once the big discovery was made below the surface, whoa, I was so surprised by what Ken had in store. I love techie stuff, so Brigands Key really hit the spot for me.
Ken not only spins an intriguing thriller, he also educates the reader on the local region so that you get a real sense of being there.
Looking forward to more of Pelham's work.
I could tell from the opening page that I was going to like this book. The author's writing style is evident from the beginning sentences and is consistent throughout the book. Numerous characters with numerous motives congregate on the small barrier island known as Brigand's Key, and between the locals, visitors, and even the dead, lies a mystery that will keep you guessing up until the end. Take a dead body that has the local medical examiner scratching his head, mix in a viral outbreak, throw in a dash of small-town politics, include a few local oddballs, and you have a good recipe for an intriguing mystery. Add in a hurricane bearing down on the island, and you are rewarded with an edge-of-your-seat page-turner that kept me enthralled for several evenings in a row. Definitely looking forward to reading more from this author!
I read books of this genre often, the Key West/Florida settings and so forth. I love any mystery/suspense set near the water and boats. Many are good but in the end its hard to distinguish one from the other. This one is different, and not what I expected, in a good way.
The main characters are well written. There are a few one liners delivered subtly and not forced at you. The setting is superbly done...the small island town, the people, and most of all, the building onslaught of a hurricane. That was really well done. There is a great tie-in to history, albeit from a fictional angle.
There was so much I enjoyed about this book, it was one of those books you could not wait to get back to at the end of the day. I've never heard of the author but I'm looking for other works by him right now. Highly recommend.
Disclaimer I live in Florida, and I love novels set in this state. That romance began with the novels of John D. MacDonald way back in the '60s. So I'm inclined to enjoy all such books if they are well written and hold my attention.
I was glad to see another Florida writer enter the scene. Ken Pelham, a resident of Florida, has a sharp eye for telling details in creating the setting and the atmosphere of this milieu. His protagonist, outcast archeologist Carson Grant, is a welcome additional to the mystery-suspense genre. Brigands Key is a story that includes a mystery corpse, an equally mysterious epidemic, political shenanigans, and a monster hurricane. Who could ask for more? Especially when the action is credible and fast-paced and the cast of characters well drawn and motivated. I won't repeat all the details of this novel, because you can read them in other 5- and 4-star reviews. I recommend this book to anyone who enjoys reading this genre—and not just to those who live in Florida.
This was an awesome book! The best way of describing it is it's one part Michael Crichton, and one part Clive Cussler. This book has a little of everything, action, mystery, a little romance, a pinch of teen angst, and a lot of political intrigue. The first part of the book sets the scenes, throwing a few hooks out to capture your attention, then it starts building the tension, one event on top of another, until all Hell breaks loose and the novel just explodes with non-stop action that will have your heart pumping and you fingers flipping pages as fast as you can read. I enjoyed Kan Pelham's two books of short stories Treacherous Bastards and Tales of Old Brigands Key, but they were quick, good, colorful stories that hit fast and were over. With Brigands Key, Pelham takes the time to flesh out characters, to build up the story lines, and then brings it all together for a frenzied finish. I couldn't recommend a book higher and will be moving on to A Place Of Fear without hesitation.
