The Gaslight series follows midwife Sarah Brandt and police detective Frank Malloy. In this episode Sarah volunteers at a Protestant mission to save poor girls from the streets and prostitution. But she soon realizes all is not well at the mission. A girl Sarah befriended is found murdered. Frank is ordered to close the case, but Sarah persists.
The suspects include the girl’s mother who believes she was the product of a rape, her pimp and her brother.
Meanwhile Frank is investigating the unsolved murder of Sarah’s husband. I like the atmosphere of New York in the days when Sarah’s friend Teddy Roosevelt was the police chief and the telephone was a new technology that would help Sarah and Frank keep in touch when they need to share clues. Maybe Sarah will get a telephone in the next book.
Sarah is torn between the poverty stricken streets where she works and the wealthy neighborhoods inhabited by her parents and her wealthy friends like Richard Dennis, the bank owner and bank president who courts her much to Frank’s dismay.
Frank’s son Brian is walking now thanks to a surgery that saved his deformed foot and Brian is also deaf. Frank struggles with helping his son, with his mother’s jealousy over his friendship with Sarah and with the demands of his job. In a city where the police are not trusted, Frank is dedicated to actually solving crimes instead of beating likely suspects into confessions.
He doesn’t want Sarah’s help in discovering and analyzing clues, but she is persistent. The friction between them is at times humorous.

Murder on Mulberry Bend A Gaslight Mystery Victoria Thompson 9780425189108 Books Reviews

What an addictive series. This is No. 5 for me and I'm hooked. I'd definitely suggest starting from book one and going in order. I'll have to buy every entry that I can't check out of my county's e library! If it were possible to assign half stars I'd bump up to 4 and 1/2. The main characters of Sarah and Malloy are likable and have tremendous chemistry together. For me the mysteries aren't terribly complicated; I've been right about the culprits well before the endings so far. But the relatively simple plots don't detract from the stories. The turn-of-the-century New York setting, the life struggles of everyone (including the well-heeled 1 percent!) and the emerging star-crossed relationship of the unlikely investigative duo are the meat of the series and will keep you reading. That the core character Sarah is an intelligent, resourceful woman who chafes against the restrictions of her sex and class is another key attraction of the series. No wonder HRC is a fan of the books!
Sarah has been pressured by her mother to date an eligible widower in exchange for some help. New York City Detective Sergeant Malloy is aware, and he is jealous, and he understands that Sarah is way out of his league.
When the murder of a young girl with a checkered past brings them together, tensions rise, and danger to Sarah rises.
The books in this series are well written the characters are interesting, the action is complex, and the details about New York City life are captivating.
Two potential caveats Sarah really has a hard time figuring this one out. Any reader who is paying attention will have the plot outlined well before Sarah.
In addition, the romantic trope of “I do, you don’t; you do, I don’t” is startling to become annoying. They really need to make up their minds. (I mean, when Molly Murphy finally marries Daniel, the world doesn’t come to an end.)
This is the 5th book in the series. Sarah is asked by a family friend to check into the mission that his recently deceased wife used to volunteer at. She is impressed by their work with girls who were on the street, helping them to learn skills and basic education. She offers to teach the girls basic hygiene and also donates some old clothes that can be used for the girls who are interviewing for positions. Sergeant Frank Malloy is called to the scene where a young woman has been murdered, and is first shocked seeing a bonnet that he recognizes. When it turns out to be a girl from the mission, Sarah is determined to be involved in finding out what happened to the young woman. This leads her to spend more time in the mission to see if the girls can help her find clues to track down the murderer, a decision that puts her in great danger.
Midwife Sarah Brandt has gotten involved with the work of the Prodigal Son Mission which helps teenage women learn skills to keep them off the streets. That’s how she is able to identify the body that Detective Sergeant Frank has found in a park – it’s one of the girls from the mission. With no one to push the police to find justice for this girl, Sarah insists that Frank figure out what happened, with a little help from her. Will they find the killer?

I was compelled to read this book soon after I read the previous one with the promise of an update on an ongoing storyline. We do get quite a twist there before this book is over. The main mystery was a little weak, however. I didn’t feel like it had the twists we normally get, although maybe that’s because I had an idea what was going early in the book. The pages still flew by since the characters are strong and the time period comes to vivid life. Any time spent in this series is time well spent.
